Which MTG product to buy comes down to your goal. For new players and gift buyers, Wizards of the Coast points to a Foundations Commander deck or Play Boosters. Play Boosters are the everyday pack for drafting and opening for fun, Collector Boosters are the premium pack for special card treatments, and Commander decks are ready-to-play 100-card decks for multiplayer games.
Reality Fracture, released worldwide on tabletop on 2 October 2026, is our example set. Contents change from set to set, so we name the Wizards page behind each detail.
Play Boosters: the everyday pack
In What Are Play Boosters? (16 October 2023), Mark Rosewater explains that Wizards combined the Set Booster and the Draft Booster into one core booster, aiming to combine the play experience of a Draft Booster with the fun of opening a Set Booster. Play Boosters premiered with Murders at Karlov Manor.
Wizards’ MTG Product Guide sums Play Boosters up as best for “draft play experience, or opening packs for fun”, with at least one rare or higher card and at least one foil card in every pack.
For Reality Fracture, Collecting Reality Fracture says each Play Booster holds 14 Magic: The Gathering cards, and the Reality Fracture Buyer’s Guide for Commander adds that these include at least 1 rare or mythic rare card and a traditional foil card. Every pack also contains echoed pairs: two cards showing the familiar Multiverse version of a character and its Echoverse twin. A Play Booster box holds 30 packs, and cards opened from Play Boosters are playable in Reality Fracture Draft and Sealed.
The name changes in 2027. In Updating Our Boosters in 2027 (5 October 2026), Wizards says that from Nauctis: The Sunken Realm, the first Magic set of 2027, Play Boosters will be called Booster Packs, and a foil card will no longer be promised in every pack.
Collector Boosters: premium treatments
Collector Boosters are made for players who care how their cards look. The Product Guide calls them a “shortcut to the coolest cards”, with showcase, borderless and extended-art cards. Each Reality Fracture Collector Booster holds 15 Magic: The Gathering cards, and a box holds 12, according to Collecting Reality Fracture. That article also says:
- Facet foil shattered mirror cards appear only in Collector Boosters and are always printed in English.
- The serialised Bloodline Recollector headliner appears only in Collector Boosters of any language, but the card is always in English.
- Foil Japan Showcase cards appear only in Collector Boosters: in Japanese in Japanese Collector Boosters, in English in all other language editions.
That language detail matters if you are choosing between Japanese and English product. For drafting, the Product Guide points to Play Boosters instead. If you plan to keep premium cards in top shape, our trading card condition guide explains NM, LP and MP grades across games.
Commander decks: Foundations or a set deck
Commander is a multiplayer format. The Buyer’s Guide explains that each player uses a 100-card deck built from nearly any card in Magic’s history, with only one copy of each card except basic lands, and a chosen commander at the helm. The Product Guide sums up Commander decks as best for “epic multiplayer games”.
Foundations Commander decks
Collecting Reality Fracture names five Foundations Commander decks: Calling All Angels, Keen Engineering, Wretched Ranks, Reign of Dragons and Tramplesaurus Rex. Each is a ready-to-play 100-card deck with a traditional foil commander. The Buyer’s Guide files them under “For New Players and Gift-Givers” and says each focuses on one of Magic’s five colours with an easy-to-understand core strategy.
Multiverse Reforged Commander deck
The set’s own Commander deck is a four-colour deck led by Jace, with two traditional foil borderless commanders and 16 new-to-Magic cards among its 98 other cards. Wizards pitches it at experienced players “looking to step up their game and try out a more intricate approach”.
Prerelease Packs, Bundles and other boxes
Wizards’ Prerelease page says Prerelease events are held at local game stores ahead of a set’s full release, and everything you need to play comes in the Prerelease Pack or is provided by the store. The Reality Fracture Prerelease Pack contained 6 Play Boosters, a traditional foil promo card, a deck box and a spindown die, and its Prerelease events ran from 25 September to 1 October 2026. For future sets, the official Wizards Store & Event Locator is the place to look up Magic stores and events.
Other Reality Fracture boxes pair Play Boosters with extras, per Collecting Reality Fracture:
- Bundle: 9 Play Boosters, a traditional foil promo card, 30 basic lands, a spindown die and a card-storage box.
- Draft Night: 12 Play Boosters, 1 Collector Booster, basic lands, tokens and a draft insert.
- Secret Lair Bundle: new with Reality Fracture, combining 6 Play Boosters, 2 Collector Boosters and 2 Secret Lair Bundle promo cards.
